Winston-Salem State University, also referred to as simply WSSU, is a historically black public research university located in Winston-Salem, which is the county seat and the largest city of Forsyth County, as well as the 4th largest city in the US state of North Carolina. Winston-Salem is also the 2nd largest municipality in the Piedmont Triad region and one of its best known features is the fact that it is home to the tallest office buildings in the region, such as 100 North Main Street.
Winston-Salem State University was officially established in 1892, by Dr. Simon Green Atkins, as Slater Industrial and State Normal School, and its motto is `Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve`. The institution's current name was adopted in 1969, 3 years before it merged into the University of North Carolina system.
Today, WSSU offers more than 40 academic majors and 7 graduate degrees, and its campus, which covers a total of 117 acres, houses approximately 6400 students.
Winston-Salem State's athletic teams are known as the Rams, who compete in NCAA Division II, in CIAA, for various sports for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are red and white and their mascot is the ram.
